Geothermal power generation is set to become a key part of the government’s goal to reach net zero emissions by 2050. The Economics Ministry on Monday organized a forum to discuss geothermal energy.
The forum included 38 companies and 112 international professionals from more than 10 countries. Participants shared their plans for geothermal development in Taiwan. The ministry says installed geothermal capacity is to reach between 3 and 6 GW by 2050.
Deputy Economics Minister Tseng Wen-sheng (曾文生) says offshore wind and solar will account for the highest proportion of Taiwan’s clean energy by 2050. But he added that authorities and the private sector have been working these last years to develop the potential of geothermal energy in the country.
A recent geological survey found Taiwan has ten high-potential geothermal areas with a total estimated generation capacity of nearly 40 GW. That’s about two-thirds of the country’s current energy capacity. These sites will be explored in five stages over the next few years.
