VIDEO: New MRT art project promotes sustainability
New MRT art promotes sustainability and environmental awareness

Que in: Sustainability is a hot topic these days. And now riders on metros around Taiwan will get to learn more about the topic as they get from point A to point B.

Metro riders in Taiwanese cities will soon be having a more colorful ride. That’s because the National Science and Technology Committee has launched their "Science X Sustainability" MRT art project. The project is meant to echo the spirit of the United Nations’ International Year of Basic Science for Sustainable Development. The project is aimed at convincing both policymakers and everyday citizens to practice sustainable development in their daily lives.

Art shown in metro cars throughout Taiwan will cover four major themes, including changes to ocean and forest areas. Others aim to remind the public about sustainable production and recycling.

The project was kicked off at an event on Monday. National Taiwan Normal University Professor Chiu Mei-Hung (邱美虹) says ending hunger is also a goal of sustainable development. She reminds the public to be vigilant, as 50% of the world’s food waste comes from Asia.

The event also invited junior high school students who won a competition for environmental education ideas. The students showed their creativity by using exercise machines to generate electricity. They hope their generation might be more innovative and environmentally conscious than their predecessors.
