Cabinet reshuffle expected on Friday

Taiwanese media reports that Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) and the rest of the country’s Cabinet may soon resign their posts. Su was seen entering the Presidential Office Building Wednesday morning to discuss the current political situation.

The Presidential Office says President Tsai affirmed Su’s governance record and thanked him for his service during their meeting.

Cabinet spokesperson Lo Ping-cheng (羅秉成) says Su and President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) will hold a discussion after the legislature goes into recess on Friday. He says any changes in government will then be shared with the public.

Talk of a Cabinet reshuffle has grown following the ruling DPP’s loss in last November’s local elections. A December poll from the Taiwan Public Opinion Foundation found that 53% of respondents supported replacing the Cabinet. It is rumored that the Cabinet may resign on Friday.

Meanwhile, acting DPP Party Chairperson Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) says the president has the authority to make personnel changes and he will respect her decision.
