Repair work for the damaged section of eastern Taiwan's Suhua highway will be completed on Sunday. That's the word from the the transportation minister Wang Kwo-tsai (王國材) on Friday. A section of the highway was crushed by a landslide on Wednesday evening.
The highway is a popular and often essential route for traveling along the eastern coast of Taiwan. However, the area is prone to landslides caused by frequent earthquakes and rainfall.
Wang says the damaged section is undergoing repairs and that extra safety measures will be put in place. He adds this section of the highway is part of the Suhua Highway Improvement Project. This project was launched in response to the frequent landslides that jeopardize the safety of travelers. Wang said the project aims to complete the entirety of its work this year.
In the meantime, Wang says he hopes the public will be patient during this time. Wang said people can travel using different routes, and that the work will lead to a safer highway for future travelers.
