Spanish lawmaker Rosa Romero Sanchez emphasizes that her country opposes any unilateral effort to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. Sanchez was speaking on Friday at a press conference of the Foreign Ministry in Taipei.

Sanchez said she supports dialogue between Taiwan and China. She said that the Spanish lower house issued a statement in October 2022 voicing concerns over the tensions in the Taiwan Strait. The statement was made in the wake of China’s continuous military incursions in the waters off Taiwan after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan last August. It was the first time that a statement was issued in support of Taiwan after Taiwan and Spain severed diplomatic relations in 1973.

Sanchez also said she hopes that Taiwan and Spain can strengthen relations.

The Spanish lawmaker expressed admiration for Taiwan’s achievements in areas such as technology and semiconductor industry. She also praised Taiwan for its COVID-19 pandemic prevention efforts.

Lawmaker Sanchez said that economic relations between Taiwan and Spain have been growing in recent years. She learned in a meeting with Taiwan’s Agriculture Council that Taiwan’s largest source of pork imports is from Spain. Sanchez went on to promote their high quality olive oil and red wine for imports to Taiwan in the future.
