A US Congressional delegation is visiting Taiwan to learn about its semiconductor industry and to promote collaborations between the two countries. The group arrived in Taiwan on Monday and met with President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) on Tuesday.
US Senator Todd Young is leading the delegation and is also responsible for initiating the CHIP Act. The act aims to boost domestic research and manufacturing of semiconductors in order to counter China's advances.
President Tsai says she believes the United States and Taiwan can continue to promote cooperation in areas such as digital trade and more comprehensive economic partnership. Taiwan and the US recently held talks on a trade initiative, and Tsai says she expects the two countries to sign a double taxation avoidance agreement soon to benefit industries on both sides.
Senator Young praised Taiwan's democracy, which developed in stark contrast to China's authoritarian regime. The senator says he hopes to strengthen exchanges in science, trade and business between Taiwan and the United States, which share many values and interests.
