The Digital Ministry should develop a plan to strengthen information security for public agencies in Taiwan. That came from the ruling DPP’s legislative group at a press conference on Wednesday. The call for greater data security measures comes as prosecutors investigate a massive data leak at the National Health Insurance Agency.

Prosecutors allege three current and former employees at the insurance agency collected and leaked data from national security officials over a period of 13 years. The alleged plot involved a retired chief secretary. Media reports indicate his family may have received significant assets following multiple trips to China over the past few years.

The Digital Ministry on Tuesday said it would help investigators if they need technical assistance. But DPP lawmaker Hung Shen-han (洪申翰) says the ministry must take responsibility for the coordination and planning of major data policies, including detection, assessment, and review. He says the ministry together with national security authorities must control the country’s information security system.

In response, Vice Digital Minister Yeh Ning (葉寧) says the ministry is implementing system authorization management measures. Those will include Zero Trust principles. These prevent users from accessing information based on their network location.
