China to attack Taiwan if Ukraine falls: US leader

The United States must continue supporting Ukraine because if the country falls, China is sure to attack Taiwan. That came from US House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairperson Michael McCaul on Sunday in an interview with CNN.

McCaul says he regularly has to educate his fellow Republicans about “what’s at stake,” in Ukraine. He says if Russia is able to defeat Ukraine, Chinese leader Xi Jinping (習近平) will invade Taiwan. The high-ranking Republican did not provide any evidence for his claim.

McCaul’s comments come as many Republican politicians in the United States have criticized the country’s support for Ukraine. The United States approved a US$40 billion military aid package for Ukraine last May, but reports suggest the country may need more support in repelling Russian advances.

Republicans won a majority in the House last November, giving them significant influence over funding decisions.

McCaul’s comment follows a number of different warnings from US leaders about the imminent threat Taiwan faces from China. Last October US State Secretary Anthony Blinken said China “wanted to speed up the process by which they would pursue reunification.” The United States has provided little evidence for these claims.
