President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) has announced government plans to improve the irrigation system on farms and to further develop agriculture. The president was speaking on Monday while visiting the Daxian Temple in Nantou County on the second day of the new lunar year.

Tsai says she has recently held high-level national security meetings to discuss countermeasures to the economic challenges Taiwan is facing. She says one part of the government’s response will be improving agricultural infrastructure, especially the country’s irrigation system. Tsai says Nantou is famous for its agricultural products and she hopes to improve the farming situation there.

The president says there has been progress in recent negotiations on a new free trade agreement between Taiwan and the United States. She says the most important issue at the moment is to create an international market for Taiwan’s agricultural products. Tsai adds the priority is to have Taiwan’s farm goods enter the US market. She says the government will market Taiwan's quality agricultural products to the world so producers can get a better price for them.
