The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)-led Legislative Yuan will on Wednesday open a special exhibit covering the history of the Taiwan government’s democratization. The exhibition has opened to mark 30 years since the first popularly elected legislators took office on February 1, 1993. The exhibit will cover important political events such as the Kaohsiung Incident, the DPP’s formation, and later democratic reforms. It will also cover more recent events such as the Sunflower Movement and former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.

President of the Legislature and founding DPP member You Si-kun (游錫堃) spoke at a press conference for the event’s launch. He said that just having a legislature does not make a country democratic, pointing to Taiwan’s authoritarian period as an example. You said that he is often portrayed as a pro-independence politician, but in reality he is only pro-democracy. He added that if democracy is successfully implemented, independence will naturally follow.
