Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) held a teleconference with speaker of the Czech parliament's lower house Markéta Pekarová Adamová on Wednesday. Adamová is expected to visit Taiwan in March. She said in a tweet that she and Wu talked about her planned trip to Asia, which will include stops in Taiwan and South Korea.

Adamová and Wu discussed recent positive developments between both countries. She says Taiwan is an important partner and investor in the technology industry. The speaker says the trip is an excellent opportunity to further economic cooperation with Taiwan.

Media reports also say Adamová reiterated to Wu her support for Taiwan because Taiwan values human rights and freedom.

Adamová also praises Czech President-elect Petr Pavel for his call with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文). Tsai was one of the first leaders Pavel spoke with after being elected last weekend. These kinds of exchanges are rare for leaders without official diplomatic relations with Taiwan.

The high-level exchange comes as relations between Taiwan and many Eastern European countries have greatly improved over the last few years.
