Taiwan’s representative to the United States Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) has denied rumors that she will run as a vice presidential candidate in the 2024 general election. Hsiao is a member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
The denial comes after comments made on television by Taiwan People’s Party politician Tsai Pi-ru (蔡壁如). Tsai said that online discussions point to Hsiao being the vice presidential candidate for the DPP regardless of who is running for the main presidential ticket.
Hsiao says her current focus is solely on maintaining a good relationship between Taiwan and the United States. She says all other chatter is purely speculation and the rumors are unfounded.
Hsiao is Taiwan’s first female representative to the United States. She has served as the representative for two and a half years. She was recently recognized by the New York Times as one of the most influential diplomats in Washington.
