A Swiss parliamentary delegation visiting Taiwan is calling for stronger cooperation and highlighting the importance of democracy. The delegation is in Taiwan for a six day visit, and has already met with President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), Legislative Speaker You Si-kun (游錫堃), and other top government officials.
Legislative Speaker You stressed that both Switzerland and Taiwan have experienced the rule of power and mutually understand the value of democracy. He said both sides look forward to more cooperation with other democratic allies in the face of threats from China.
Meanwhile, Swiss delegation co-chair Fabian Molina said the trip aims to send an important message that “democracy must prevail.” He said he is confident the vote on his motion to strengthen cooperation between the Swiss parliament’s lower house and Taiwan’s legislature will pass soon.
Molina said the visit to Taiwan will not be his last and he hopes Taiwan and Switzerland will share the universal values of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
