The Defense Ministry says Taiwan has not discovered any dangerous balloons in its airspace. The ministry spoke on Tuesday, saying the military is monitoring the situation and will properly handle any balloons that threaten national security and people’s livelihoods.
This statement comes just over a week after the United States shot down a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon that entered its territory. Since then, some Latin American countries and Canada have reported seeing balloons as well, and the United States has shot down another three unidentified objects.
The Financial Times has reported that many Chinese military balloons have entered Taiwan’s airspace over the past few years. This report has made other countries question why Taiwan did not share relevant information about these balloons earlier.
Major General Huang Wen-chi (黃文啓) declined to comment on the Chinese balloons mentioned in the Financial Times report. He says Taiwan has only detected Chinese weather balloons, and it will continue closely monitoring the situation.
