US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman says the United States strongly opposes any unilateral actions that undermine peace in the Taiwan Strait. Sherman was speaking at a recent event at the Washington-based Brookings Institution think tank.
Sherman says that the United States will continue to support Taiwan and its self-defense capabilities. She stresses that a conflict in the Taiwan Strait would impact Asia and global economic security. Sherman also calls on other countries to discourage China’s growing coercion of Taiwan.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jeff YJ Liu (劉永健) on Thursday said since taking office, the Biden administration has repeatedly reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to Taiwan. Liu says in the face of China’s military provocations, Taiwan will continue to strengthen its self-defense capabilities and stand firm against authoritarian expansion.
Liu emphasizes that Taiwan will continue to deepen its partnership with the United States, while strengthening cooperation with like-minded countries to maintain peace and security in the Taiwan Strait. Liu adds that includes maintaining prosperity and security of supply chains in the Indo-Pacific region.
