The opposition Kuomintang (KMT) effectively prevented Premier Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) from giving his first report to the legislature on Friday. The KMT occupied the podium first thing in the morning and boycotted Premier Chen’s scheduled report.

Despite the move by the opposition, Chen did speak to reporters about how the government plans to use the NT$140 billion excess revenues it received from taxes. Chen said it will be used to help strengthen society and the economy by aiding small-to-midsize businesses and low income populations.

He said the government is especially concerned about people with student loans, mortgages and low income households. Chen also said that every citizen will be given NT$6,000 rebated due to the surplus income from tax revenues. KMT lawmakers protested with signs saying the government should hand out NT$10,000.

After the incident, it was reported that Premier Chen is now scheduled to formally deliver his report next Friday the 24th.
