National Taiwan University (NTU)  is considering how it should address student and faculty usage of the chatbot ChatGPT. The university announced on Sunday that it is still determining the chatbot’s capabilities and influences.

ChatGPT is a relatively new chatbot with a wide range of abilities, from coding and communicating in different languages to writing essays and resumes. Other institutions like Hong Kong University have already banned using ChatGPT or other AI tools for courses, homework, or analysis saying it constitutes plagiarism.

NTU says people cannot stop the development of AI tools, and they need to find positive ways to work together with AI. The university says it has always been a diverse and open-minded place, and it hopes to get a better understanding of ChatGPT before making decisions.

The university does not condone using ChatGPT to write essays, but it encourages teachers to spend time with their students to explain when it can be appropriate and useful to use AI tools.

NTU says professors will introduce ChatGPT and the university’s principles regarding its usage during the new semester. These principles state that schools must adjust to ChatGPT as a learning opportunity, but people should not just use it to paraphrase content. The principles also state that people should verify AI-generated content, rather than immediately accept it as true.
