A bipartisan American congressional delegation has met with Taiwan’s legislature to discuss collaboration in security, business, and trade. The delegation visited the legislature on Monday, a day after they arrived for their five-day trip.
The delegation includes representatives Ro Khanna, Jake Auchincloss, Jonathan Jackson, and Tony Gonzales. Khanna has co-sponsored a US-Taiwan public health act that would establish a disease monitoring center between the two countries. This is significant as Taiwan is excluded from many international health organizations and conferences.
Legislative Speaker You Si-kun (游錫堃) says the United States is Taiwan’s most important trade partner and supporter for peace in the Taiwan Strait. He also says Khanna and Auchincloss supported Taiwan’s inclusion in international economic initiatives like the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, although Taiwan is still not a member.
You says he’s grateful for US support and hopes the two countries can continue to collaborate more in the future. He adds that Taiwan and the United States value democracy and freedom, and they must work together to protect global peace and stability.
