Taiwanese military battalions are going to train in the United States for the first time. That’s according to a report published by Taiwan’s Central News Agency, who was quoting an anonymous source.

The source says the 542nd and 333rd Combined Arms Battalions are set to go to the United States sometime during the second half of the year.

Taiwanese platoons and companies have previously done similar training, but this is the first time an entire battalion will train in the United States. A battalion typically has between 300 and 1,000 soldiers.

The Defense Ministry on Wednesday said all foreign military exchanges were done according to regulations, but declined to comment on any details.

The military exchange comes as the United States and Taiwan have recently boosted similar interactions due to increased Chinese pressure. Last October, President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) said in an interview with CNN that the US military was training Taiwan’s armed forces in Taiwan.
