Two of Taiwan’s top officials on Tuesday met with high-ranking representatives of the US government behind closed doors in Washington. The Financial Times reported on the event and called it a part of the annual “special diplomatic dialogue” between senior officials from the two countries.
Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) and National Security chief Wellington Koo (顧立雄) represented Taiwan at the seven-hour-long meeting. They were accompanied by Taiwan’s envoy to the United States Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) while meeting at the Virginia headquarters of the American Institute in Taiwan. The institute acts as the United States’ official representative to Taiwan.
The Taiwanese delegation met with US Deputy State Secretary Wendy Sherman, White House Asia co-ordinator Kurt Campbell, and Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer. A number of other senior US diplomatic and security personnel, as well as institute director Sandra Oudkirk were also present at the meeting.
None of the attendants spoke to the press before or after the event, but Wu and Koo waved to media representatives gathered outside and seemed in good spirits.
