President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) has chosen a selection panel to identify candidates for the upcoming vacancies on the Supreme Court bench.
Current judges Huang Hung-hsia (黃虹霞), Wu Chen-han (吳陳鐶), Tsai Ming-cheng (蔡明誠), and Lin Chun-i (林俊益) are scheduled to finish serving their terms on September 30. President Tsai will pick four nominees to fill the upcoming vacancies on the 15-member court.
Vice President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) is on the panel, which also includes two former Judicial Yuan presidents and a former Supreme Court judge. The panel’s first meeting will take place on March 8. Presidential Office spokesperson Lin Yu-chan (林聿禪) says the panel will conduct the nomination process transparently and fairly, and it will welcome nominations from various organizations.
The nominees will require the legislature’s confirmation after the president has made her selections. Lin says this process is essential to guarantee the judiciary's independence and appointing the new judges is crucial to protecting the Constitution and the public’s fundamental rights.
