Taiwan will likely see relief from a monthslong egg shortage in May or June. That’s according to Agriculture Minister Chen Chi-chung (陳吉仲) speaking at the legislature on Wednesday.
Outbreaks of avian flu in central and southern Taiwan have forced authorities to cull large flocks of hens, making costs rise. Last Sunday Taiwan’s national egg price committee raised prices for the second month in a row, this time by 6%.
Chen says imports, warming weather in the south, and other measures are beginning to stabilize supply. But he adds it will take until May or June for supply to fully return to normal.
Meanwhile, Premier Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) says egg supply issues are already beginning to stabilize. He believes the Agriculture Ministry can balance supply and demand. He adds the public should not hoard eggs.
