President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) has ordered the Constitutional Court justice selection panel to gauge public opinion before nominating new justices.

Four outgoing Constitutional Court justices’ will see their terms end on September 30. So President Tsai has established a special panel to assist her with nominating candidates for their successors. The panel held its first meeting on Wednesday.

Speaking at the meeting, President Tsai pledged that the panel will ensure the seamless functioning of the nation's constitutional framework and guarantee transparency in nominations. The president also said that the panel would consider inputs and proposals from all sectors and present a shortlist of candidates.

Last year, the Constitutional Court delivered 20 decisions on data privacy, initiating legal proceedings, and Indigenous rights. Tsai says these decisions helped build trust in the Constitutional Court.

Taiwan’s legislature needs to confirm the president’s nominees before they can take their posts.
