A multi-day program showcasing Indigenous Taiwanese documentaries is set to open in New York City. “Indigenous with a Capital ‘I’” will show the films at the Anthology Film Archive from March 10 to 14.
The program will showcase Indigenous documentaries made between 1994 and 2000, a period known as the first wave of Indigenous documentary films. That period saw an explosion in Indigenous filmmaking and creators sharing stories from their own people.
The documentary showcase will be divided into seven programs spread over the four days and include 16 films. Indigenous documentary filmmaker Mayaw Bihow and film programmer Chung Pei-hua (鍾佩樺) will both speak during the event.
The program is organized by the Taiwan International Documentary Festival, and co-presented by the Taiwan Film & Audiovisual Institute, Taiwan Docs, and the Taipei Cultural Center in New York.
