Migrant workers in Taiwan will no longer be subject to special quarantine rules starting on March 15. That’s the word from the Labor Ministry, who made the announcement on Thursday.
Unlike other types of workers entering Taiwan, migrant workers are required to quarantine for one week in single rooms with their own bathroom. This creates a financial burden on many workers, as accommodation can be expensive. Workers are also required to submit daily COVID-19 tests to the government.
Both requirements will be lifted on the 15th. Migrant workers will now only have to complete a week of COVID monitoring.
The announcement comes just weeks after migrant rights groups protested in front of the legislature. The groups claimed that pandemic policies toward migrant workers, who are disproportionately from southeast asian countries, are discriminatory.
