President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) will be presented with a leadership award from the conservative American think tank Hudson Institute during her visit to the United States. That’s according to a Thursday story from the Financial Times, which cited sources familiar with the matter. Tsai will reportedly receive the award at an event in New York City on March 30th.
Previous recipients of the award include US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, media mogul and Fox News owner Rupert Murdoch, and former UN Ambassador and 2024 Republican presidential hopeful Nikki Haley.
The award ceremony is part of President Tsai’s visit which will include trips to New York City and California. She will meet with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in his California home district. Tsai has not announced any intention to go to Washington, likely to avoid a Chinese backlash to her trip. Speaker McCarthy said Tsai’s visit to the United States does not rule out his own potential visit to Taiwan, saying China cannot tell him where he can or cannot travel.
