In many parts of Taiwan, Guanyin, the goddess of mercy, is a powerful female divinity and an immensely popular figure. As the embodiment of the virtue of compassion, the ever-benevolent immortal is known to aid those who are suffering and work for the deliverance and salvation of all sentient beings.

Like Matsu, Taiwan’s ancestral deity, Guanyin is also an object of widespread devotion, who is worshiped in countless temples, shrines, and homes. Some of the most famous of these places dedicated to Guanyin are the Zhulin Mountain Buddhist Temple in northern Taiwan and the various Longshan Temples in different parts of Taiwan.

These religious milieus include Buddhist and Taoist practitioners, as well as adherents of popular religion, who honor the goddess with visits and imagery, burning incense and red candles, chanting and pilgrimages, and tributes of vegetarian food, flowers, and drink. In addition, Guanyin is praised in numerous scriptures, operas, tales, and folk literature as well as puppet shows, film projections, and other cultural performances and hieratic traditions.

In 2023, the salvific goddess will be celebrated with special ceremonies on different days of the lunar year. Particularly, Friday, March 10 – the 19th day of the second moon – is her putative birthday; Saturday, August 5, – the 19th day of the sixth moon – is the day of her enlightenment; and, Thursday, November 2 – the 19th day of the ninth moon – is the remembrance of her death. On these auspicious anniversaries, many people in Taiwan pay homage to Guanyin not only to commemorate her past attainments, but especially to receive her future blessings.
