A German think tank says Western countries could leverage China’s reliance on Western technology in the event of a Chinese attack on Taiwan. That came from a recent report by the German Economic Institute (IW), a private economic research institute in Germany.

The report says if China were to attack Taiwan, Western nations could come together to boycott the action, like they did to Russia after its invasion of Ukraine.

The authors Simon Gerards Iglesias and Jurgen Matthes described China’s reliance on Western imports in 2021. They say at that time, 53% of China’s imports were from the West and worth 1.25 trillion euros. China is also heavily reliant on imports for its semiconductor industry, as 68% of its semiconductors are imported from the West and Taiwan.

China also imports over 90% of some food resources like meat and grain, as well as raw materials like iron ore and gold.

The think tank suggests Western nations could leverage China’s reliance on foreign products and resources in the event of a Chinese attack on Taiwan.
