Premier Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) says he hopes state employees will receive salary raises this year. Chen made the remarks on Tuesday in response to questions regarding stagnant salaries during a period of inflation.

Although Taiwan is experiencing inflation, Chen says the country’s economy has been growing over the past two years. He adds that state employees have made important contributions during the pandemic, and he hopes the committee responsible for their salaries will consider making adjustments.

The category of state employees includes a wide range of professions, including people working in public education and the military.

Chief statistician Chu Tzer-ming (朱澤民) says the value of people’s salaries goes down when commodities cost more but incomes remain the same. He adds that state employees haven’t gotten raises in the past two years and this is potentially unfair.
