The British government says it opposes unilateral changes to the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and cross-strait issues should be resolved through dialogue between Taiwan and China. That’s according to the latest edition of the UK’s security and international policy report, the Integrated Review 2023.

The report says the UK will strengthen cooperation with its allies to bolster security and counterbalance China’s aggression in the South China Sea and refusal to renounce the use of force against Taiwan.

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that Taiwan and the UK share the same values for democracy, freedom, human rights and rule of law. The ministry says Taiwan will continue to build relations with the UK and other like-minded countries to become an indispensable trade and security partner in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Foreign Ministry adds that the security report follows the joint statement issued by the UK and Australian foreign and defense ministers in February. The joint statement reiterated the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
