Democracies should unite against authoritarian countries: Foreign Ministry

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry says democratic countries should further unite against authoritarian countries. That statement on Tuesday was in response to Chinese President Xi Jinping’s (習近平) recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin.

The meeting marks the first time Xi has convened with Putin since the war in Ukraine began. At the China-Russia talks, the two leaders said they share similar goals. Xi also said he supports another presidential term for Putin.

In response, the Foreign Ministry says democratic countries should respond to these authoritarian countries’ ambitions. The ministry says Taiwan is at the frontline of democracy, and it will work to strengthen cooperation with other like-minded countries.

Meanwhile, former US national security adviser Robert O’Brien led a delegation to Taiwan this week. The Foreign Ministry says it welcomes more visits from think tanks and scholars to expand global understanding of Taiwan and rally more support for the country.
