The Fijian government has reincluded “Taiwan” in its representative office name and reinstated Taiwan’s diplomatic privileges. Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that the representative office name has changed from “Taipei Trade Office in Fiji” back to “Trade Mission of the Republic of China (Taiwan).”
The previous name change occurred in 2018 when China pressured the Pacific island’s government to remove the terms “Republic of China” and “Taiwan” from the Taiwanese office. Taiwanese authorities continued to urge Fiji to reverse the change.
Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry says it thanks Fiji for the decision. Taiwan has had a presence on the island since 1971, and the name change also reinstates Taiwan’s diplomatic privileges and immunities with the island.
The ministry says Fiji is an important partner in the Pacific region. It adds that Taiwan looks forward to extending their relationship and collaborating on different issues to bring mutual stability and economic prosperity.
