President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) is encouraging Taiwanese nationals living abroad to invest in Taiwan. Tsai spoke on Tuesday while receiving a delegation of overseas Taiwanese from Japan.

Tsai says the launch of several projects in Taiwan over the past few years has led to a total investment of over NT$2 trillion (US$66 billion). That has created more than 140,000 local jobs. She says the government has extended its entire investment program to 2024, hoping to encourage more people to return to Taiwan.

The president says Taiwan has worked through the pandemic’s challenges to achieve steady economic development and it ranked first worldwide in the 2022 Nikkei Asia COVID-19 Recovery Index. She adds that last month the US think tank the Heritage Foundation ranked Taiwan fourth in the world in terms of economic freedom, which was its best performance in history.

The president says Taiwan’s progress in regional trade will grow as it moves toward international markets. Tsai also says she hopes overseas Taiwanese in Japan will continue supporting the government to garner more international support for Taiwan.
