Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry has thanked Japan for advocating for the importance of peace in the Taiwan Strait. The ministry made the comments on Monday, a day after Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa met with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang (秦剛) in Beijing.
During the meeting, Hayashi expressed concerns to Qin about the rise in China’s military activity, and emphasized the need for stability in the region. But Qin responded that Japan should not interfere in matters involving Taiwan or undermine Beijing’s authority.
Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jeff Liu (劉永健) says Japan has repeatedly demonstrated that Taiwan and Japan share the same fundamental values and cherish their important partnership. He adds that Japan has also raised awareness in the international community of the cross-Strait situation.
The ministry also says it welcomes the global attention and other positive behavior that helps maintain peace and stability in the region. It adds that Taiwan will continue building stronger relations with like-minded countries to ensure mutual peace and prosperity.
