President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) will meet with U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on April 5. That was according to Presidential Office spokesperson Chang Tun-han (張惇涵) on Monday.
Tsai is currently on a 10-day tour with Central American allies, and she is making transit stops in the United States. McCarthy’s office announced it will hold a bipartisan meeting with Tsai at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California.
China has reiterated that it strongly opposes any official contact between U.S. and Taiwanese authorities. In response, Chang says Taiwan has the right to interact with other democratic countries.
Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry says the country will not be influenced or oppressed by others. It adds that Taiwan will continue to work with other democratic nations to uphold human rights, equality, and freedom.
