A bipartisan delegation of members of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee will be visiting Taiwan this week and meet with President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文). The delegation, led by Committee Chair Rep. Michael McCaul, will also include visits to South Korea and Japan before arriving in Taipei on April 6.
Besides meeting with President Tsai, the delegation will meet with Taiwanese lawmakers from the Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee. DPP committee member Wang Ting-yu (王定宇) says the visit’s purpose is to gain a better understanding of threats and challenges facing Taiwan.
McCaul had stated in February his intention to lead a delegation to Taiwan in the spring. He added that it was important to deter China by showing support for Taiwan.
