Taiwan needs to strengthen its defensive capabilities, but it also needs dialogue with China to lower Beijing's motivations to attack Taiwan. That's the word from opposition KMT legislator Chen I-hsin (陳以信) during a recent exclusive interview for the Ukrainian TV station Pryamiy.

According to a press release on Wednesday, during the interview Chen said Taiwan is not Ukraine and should actively avoid conflict and seek peace. He said Taiwan should strengthen its defenses by increasing missile and manpower reserves. But at the same time, the country should seek dialogue with China, to lower Beijing's motivations to attack Taiwan. Chen added that former President Ma Ying-jeou's (馬英九) recent visit to China is a message of peace. He said the visit proves many in Taiwan seek peace and stability, which goes against many foreign media outlets calling Taiwan the most dangerous place in the world.

In the interview, Chen condemned Russia for its military invasion of Ukraine. He said Russia is exhausting its military might in Ukraine, which is elevating China's geostrategic position. Chen added the peace proposal from China's leader Xi Jinping (習近平) is doomed to fail without the Ukrainian people's agreement.
