On Friday, Legislative Speaker You Si-kun (游錫堃) met with the members of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee led by chairman Michael McCaul.

You said the visit is a testimony to the flourishing U.S.-Taiwan relations. The U.S. delegation was the first Foreign Affairs Committee delegation to enter Taiwan’s Legislature in 44 years since the passing of Taiwan Relations Act in 1979.

The speaker highlights that the state of global democracies is currently under threat. You says that freedom, democracy, and human rights form the foundation of human civilization. He urges people in the free world to stand in solidarity and fend off authoritarian and dictatorial threats.

McCaul says the delegation's visit to Taiwan is to demonstrate the United States’ solid support of Taiwan and to deter China from taking further action in assaulting Taiwan. McCaul also says the current tension on the global stage has reached a new height since WWII, as Russia invaded Ukraine and the CCP became more aggressive towards Taiwan in the Pacific region. He urges Taiwan to stand firm and show its strength.

You said Taiwan is aware of the threat and uncertainty brought on by the cooperation between China and Russia, and Taiwanese people are determined to defend themselves.
