The Foreign Ministry says France has advocated for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait at multiple international forums. The ministry spoke on Tuesday in response to French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to China last week.
During his visit, Macron said Europe should avoid getting involved in any US-China conflict regarding Taiwan. He said Europe should focus on strategic independence and not intervene in unrelated international affairs.
Media sources have criticized Macron for taking a passive stance on rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait. But Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry has praised that over the past few years, France has made several joint statements with other countries that support cross-strait peace and building relations in the Indo-Pacific region.
The Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC) has also spoken up to say that Macron’s views on Taiwan do not reflect all of Europe, and the world must respect Taiwan’s democracy. IPAC is an international group of lawmakers from democratic countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Japan, and the United States.
