Taiwan looks forward to future cooperation with Canada. That’s the word from President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) during a meeting with a Canadian parliamentary delegation on Wednesday. The multi-party delegation is led by the Canadian parliament’s Public Safety and National Security Committee Chair John McKay. The group also includes several top lawmakers in defense and foreign affairs.
Tsai said Canada is an important partner for Taiwan. She thanked Canada for its long-term support and said Taiwan will contribute towards protecting democratic values alongside other countries.
Tsai also said she has initiated discussions with Canada on a foreign investment arrangement. She said she hopes this deal will strengthen relationships and increase bilateral trade opportunities.
Tsai added she hopes Canada will support Taiwan’s membership in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). It currently includes eleven members, including Japan, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. The agreement focuses on promoting free trade and lowering tariffs between global partners. Tsai said Taiwan is prepared to engage with the international community at this level and adhere to its high standards.
