Taiwan’s Defense Ministry says the US warship that sailed through the Taiwan Strait is considered routine transit. The ministry spoke on Monday, a day after the USS Milius crossed through the Taiwan Strait.
The US warship sailed north through the strait and the ministry says Taiwan’s military has a firm grasp of all regional activity.
The warship’s activity comes a week after China concluded three days of military drills surrounding Taiwan. The drills were in response to President Tsai Ing-wen’s (蔡英文) meeting with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California. Beijing strongly condemned the meeting.
The United States sends warships through the Taiwan Strait approximately once a month. Washington says the USS Milius’s activity represents the country’s commitment to the freedom of navigation in the Indo-Pacific.
