A government report says Taipei has the most jobless claims in the country, with 7.5% of people between the ages of 25 and 29 in Taipei unemployed in 2022.
People living in Taipei are considering moving out of the city for lower housing prices and more job opportunities. Taipei’s Labor Department says it is working with schools and industries to lower unemployment. New graduates are searching for their dream jobs at career expos, but many fear that the job market is oversaturated.
Taiwan’s second highest unemployment rate falls in Tainan at an average of 7%, with Kaohsiung in third place at 6.3%.
According to professor Hsin Bing-long (辛炳隆), Taipei has less demand for new investments in business and public infrastructures, which are essential for creating new job opportunities. In response, many people choose to move to New Taipei or Taoyuan for jobs.
Taipei’s Employment Service Office Director He Hong-cheng (何洪丞) told reporters that they are connecting enterprises with schools to build a talent pipeline to lower the unemployment rate.
Despite the city government’s efforts, many still find themselves at crossroads with Taipei’s high housing prices taking up a large portion of their paycheck.
