Wall Street Journal: TSMC negotiating US$15 billion in US subsidies

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on Wednesday that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is seeking up to US$15 billion in subsidies from the United States government. However, the company opposes certain conditions US authorities attached to the subsidies.

The newspaper cited sources familiar with the situation saying that TSMC is concerned with the subsidy conditions requiring chip makers to share profits and provide operational information. TSMC raised its investment in the new Arizona plant to US $40 billion last December, more than three times the original investment amount.

According to a Reuters report, the U.S. Commerce Department has announced a US $39 billion semiconductor manufacturing grant program in February, which will be open for application starting this June. Companies that apply for more than US $150 million will be required to share revenue that exceeds the agreed-upon thresholds.

TSMC declined a request for comment from Reuters.
