The United States President Joe Biden spoke with President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen on the phone on Thursday after von der Leyen's recent visit to Beijing. According to the White House, both sides reiterate the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and their commitment to a rules-based international order, human rights, and fair trade.
von der Leyen met with Xi Jinping in Beijing in early April, when she told Xi that maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is of paramount importance, and that challenging the status quo with military force is unacceptable.
Biden and von der Leyen also reaffirm the commitment of the United States and the European Union to ensure Ukraine has the economic and defense assistance it needs, and to continue working together to impose sanctions on the Kremlin. The two leaders also discussed the ongoing joint efforts to accelerate the transition to clean energy economies.
