Taiwan and the United States are negotiating stockpiling weapons of the Indo-Pacific Command in Taiwan. Premier Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) says that the two countries are still at early stage of negotiation.
Chen says Taiwan needs to have its own self-defense capabilities and improving the readiness is the best way to avoid conflict. He adds that Taiwan intends to maintain regional peace and stability with like-minded countries in the region.
US presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has recently suggested that the National Rifle Association set up a system that could provide every Taiwanese household with a gun. He said this could improve Taiwan’s self defense capabilities and discourage a Chinese attack.
In response, Chen says Taiwan is not considering Ramaswamy’s plan. He adds that while this kind of suggestion reflects a friendly urgency of upgrading the public awareness of national defense, Taiwan’s culture and conditions are different from the United States.
