Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin arrived in Taiwan on Monday for a two-day visit and meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文).
President Tsai welcomed the delegation, saying that Virginia and Taiwan have had a 42-year sister state relationship. She said it is especially meaningful that Youngkin chose to visit Taiwan for his first overseas visit since taking office. The president also thanked the state of Virginia for its support of Taiwan and its recently passed resolution to establish a business office in Taiwan.
The president says that Taiwan became Virginia's fifth largest source of imports and fourth largest export market in Asia last year, and that she welcomes a Virginian business office in Taiwan to continue deepening bilateral economic and trade relations.
President Tsai notes that Taiwan and Virginia have a long-standing relationship in the fields of education and culture. She says she looks forward to the continued strengthening of cooperation and exchange between the two sides and the launch of more diversified cooperation projects in industry and technology.
Youngkin says Taiwan will be Virginia’s fourth overseas business office after Germany, South Korea, and Japan. He adds that the establishment of the business office represents the firm commitment of Virginia to promote cooperation in the region and strengthen relations with Taiwan.
