President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) has conferred the Order of the Brilliant Star on Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei in recognition of his contributions towards advancing Taiwan-Guatemala ties. Tsai presented the honor on Tuesday, a day after Giammattei arrived in Taiwan with a delegation.
Tsai says the state honor demonstrates Taiwan’s gratitude towards Guatemala, which she visited less than a month ago. She says the two countries have collaborated on healthcare, trade, and education, and she hopes they continue working together to bring prosperity to its people.
Giammattei says his country will continue to support Taiwan's sovereignty and territorial integrity. He says he is enthusiastic about the strengthened bilateral ties, and he looks forward to more collaboration opportunities with Taiwan.
Guatemala is one of Taiwan’s 13 diplomatic allies, and this is Giammattei’s first time visiting Taiwan as president.
