Rti teams up with The Reporter to provide multilingual programs for youths

Radio Taiwan International (Rti) is teaming up with The Reporter, an independent media platform in Taiwan, to launch a new program “Who’s in the News.” The program will offer a diverse range of audio and visual content aimed at encouraging reading for young audiences.

The project will include family-friendly news articles from The Reporter translated into 10 languages, including English, Japanese, Indonesian, Thai, Vietnamese, Filipino, Taiwanese, Hakka, Cantonese, plus the original Mandarin Chinese.

“Who’s in the News” will introduce Taiwan's politics, society, technology, and culture to young international readers and language learners. Two articles will be released each month and are available in podcast format from both Rti and The Reporter.

Rti chair Cheryl Lai (賴秀如) says providing friendly and accessible content to foreign language communities in Taiwan is an immediate goal of Rti. She adds that Taiwan is becoming more diverse, and is currently home to over one million immigrants and migrant workers.

For this project, Rti prioritized languages reflecting the largest immigrant and migrant communities in Taiwan, including Indonesian, Thai, Vietnamese, and Filipino. Rti is dedicated to expanding access for Southeast Asian communities in Taiwan and increasing content for young people.

CEO of The Reporter Ho Jung-hsing (何榮幸) says amplifying underserved voices has been a long term goal for The Reporter and their sub-brand The Reporter for Kids. Together with Rti's multilingual services, Ho says he looks forward to providing diverse content to enhance media and cultural literacy among the youth.

The first episode of "Who’s in the News" features the story of two couples operating a halal restaurant in Taiwan, highlighting recent Eid al-Fitr celebrations. Why do Muslim restaurant owners in Taiwan face west when they butcher meat and perform rituals? What is halal certification? Could halal restaurants in Taiwan open for business during Ramadan? Head to Rti's website or check out Rti and The Repoprter’s podcast platforms to find out.
