A new section of Taipei’s metro system is expected to begin construction within two years. That’s according to Premier Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) and Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安), who met on Friday to discuss planning of the MRT Circular Line’s new east section.
Chen says the metro is the most important and trusted public transportation for Taipei residents. He says the new east section will once again prove Taiwan’s metro system sets an international standard.
The government approved construction for the east section on March 29.The new project is projected to be 13.25 kilometers long, have 10 underground stations, and cost NT$102.4 billion (US$3.36 billion). The project is expected to be completed within 10 years.
Chiang says he hopes the construction will improve convenience for metro riders living in Taipei’s northern Neihu District. He hopes the central government can assist with other construction projects that have been delayed or suffered cost increases due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
