VIDEO: How to beat the heat in Taiwan
People in Taiwan often use umbrellas to shield themselves from the sun.

It’s mid-spring and that means temperatures are rising across Taiwan. In Taiwan people have various ways to cope with the heat and protect themselves from the sun.

Video script:

A clear day in Taiwan’s mid-spring isn’t all just sun and games, it also means very high temperatures. And the weather has started a heated debate about how to best keep cool. These people may look hot wearing jackets in the heat, but long clothes and umbrellas are used for protection from the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

One woman says she likes to cover up with full length sleeves, hood, and visor. Some bus stops in the southern city of Kaohsiung even have a secret weapon, misters that spray water when the temperature goes above 35 degrees Celsius. One woman says she cooled down by sitting under the mist for twenty minutes.

Many Taiwanese also turn to eating shaved ice or buying beverages from drink shops to keep cool. A drink shop worker says he notices that people ask for more ice in their drinks when the weather gets hot.

With temperatures in some southern areas expected to reach 38 degrees Celsius, you can expect all kinds of innovative ways Taiwanese people use to keep cool.
